More and more premature births and more newborn deaths, indicators of prematurity are bad! This is the cry of warning launched by the Collective Prematurity.

What is premature birth?

  • The World Health Organization defines as premature any birth occurring before 37 weeks of amenorrhea (SA). Today, the viability limit of a premature baby (the limit below which the baby will not be resuscitated) is set at 22/23 weeks and at least 500 grams.

There are 2 types of premature births

  • Prematurity of spontaneous origin due to early onset of contractions or premature rupture of membranes.
  • Medically induced prematurity, caused by medical teams when the continuation of pregnancy puts the health of the mother or fetus at risk.

Prematurity is divided into four stages

  • Little prematurity: from the beginning of the 33rd to the end of the 36th SA.
  • Great prematurity: from the beginning of the 28th to the end of the 32nd SA.
  • Very great prematurity: between the 26th and the 27th SA.
  • Extremely premature: births occurring before the 26th SA.

Known risk factors

  • A large number of risk factors have been identifiedt premature birth: intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), history of premature birth, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, smoking, infections, maternal age (under 17 years of age or over 40 years of age), genetics, multiple pregnancies, and too close pregnancies.
